The occurrence of functional gastro-intestinal disorders in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients who are in remissionis a significant problem for patients and represents a diagnostic and therapeutic conundrum for clinicians. On the one hand, untreated intestinal inflammation can lead to a full-blown relapse of IBD, and, on the other, overtreatment of innocuous functional symptoms may lead to decreased quality of life and increased morbidity.
