Expanding evidence fuels the hypothesis that changes in both the composition and function of the intestinal microbiome are linked with several multifactorial diseases, including celiac disease (CD). Herein we summarized data on microbiome alterations described as theoretical causal factors of CD. Moreover, this paper also attempts to encompass available clinical studies aimed at evaluating a possible role for probiotics in treated CD.
