Fibrosis is a serious complication of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Mesenchymal cells, fibroblasts, myofibroblasts and smooth muscle cells mainly activate fibrogenesis. Currently, therapies include medical treatment targeting the inflammatory component of stenosis, endoscopic treatment, and surgery. Innovative therapies include TGF-β inhibitors, immunotherapy with autologous T regulatory cells, pluripotent stem cells.
