Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in neonatal intensive care units. Preterm delivery, use of antibiotics and formula feeding are the most important risk factors, acting on an immature gastrointestinal tract with abnormal bacterial colonization.
