Stress-related events may impact the course of an existing liver disease. The “stress response” is mediated by the activation of the hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal axis and the sympathetic nervous system. Considering the broad effects glucocorticoids and catecholamines have on immune cell function, it is likely that stress has a significant impact on the hepatic inflammatory response.
