Given the impact of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in childhood, a reliable and timely diagnosis and an accurate follow-up is mandatory. Faecal calprotectin has been investigated as a surrogate marker of mucosal inflammation to reliably differentiate between IBD and non-organic disease and to assess disease activity better than clinical indices, serum markers and less invasive and cheaper than endoscopy.
