Knowledge of the physiology of nausea is reviewed to provide a background for critical review of Rome IV criteria for inclusion of functional nausea as a “new” FGID in children and adolescents. The possibility that neonates can experience nausea is discussed and we recommend that the precautionary principle is adopted until more objective diagnostic methodology is developed. Pharmacological approaches to the treatment of nausea are briefly reviewed.
