The neonatal microbiota is highly different compared to the adult one, since it is characterized by rapid changes. The microbiota colonizes the host before birth and matures definitively during the twelve months following delivery. The gestational age at the birth is one of main factors that delineates the profile of gut microbiota. Breastfeeding is another important determining factor in establishing the gut microbiome.
